UM232R - Development module for FT232R

The UM232R module is a USB - Serial UART (TTL) development module for the FT232R IC device. The UM232R is supplied on a PCB designed to fit a 24 pin DIP socket, and provides access to all UART and CBUS interface pins of the FT232R device. The UM232R can be configured as either USB bus-powered or self-powered and also supports 5V or 3V level interface IOs via two sets of jumper setting pins. Full hardware handshaking is supported and the UM232R can communicate at up to 3MBaud at TTL/CMOS levels. Ideal for rapid prototyping and development of FT232R designs, this module is also suitable for incorporation into low/medium volume finished product designs.

VDIP1 -  Prototyping Module for Vinculum VNC1L-1A

The VDIP1 module is an MCU to USB host controller development module for the VNC1L device. VDIP1 is supplied on a PCB designed to fit a 24-pin DIP socket and provides access to all UART, SPI and FIFO interface pins of the VNC1L device. The initial product member of the family is the VNC1L device which features two USB Ports which can be individually configured by firmware as Host or Slave ports. Connect USB Flash drives to MCUs via the Vinculum's UART, SPI or parallel FIFO interfaces. FT232BM - USB-UART RS232, RS485, RS422)

The FT232BM is USB to serial interface device. Ideal for rapid upgrading of serial devices to USB. The serial interface is at TTL levels. It is compatible with RS232, RS485, and RS422 when combined with a Serial transceiver (MAX232 or similar). Capable of transferring data at up to 1 MegaBaud (RS232) and 3MBaud (TTL/RS422/RS485).


FT245BM - USB-Parallel port (uP, uC and etc.)

The FT245BM is USB to 8 bit parallel interface device. Ideal for interfacing Microcontrollers, FPGA's, PLD's, DSP's, etc. to USB. The interface is at TTL levels. Capable of data transfer at up to 1MByte/s (with D2XX direct drivers), and up to 3Ěbaud/s (VCP drivers).  

The above two devices are USB1.1 and USB 2.0 compatible.  

Above described devices are state machine based, not microcontroller based. They require no programming, and no firmware.Moreover  - you can power your device from USB  – there is no more need of external power supply. 


FT2232C - Single chip USB-to-2 serial or 2 parallel ports

The FT2232C transceiver combiines the functionality of FT232BM and FT245BM in single IC. FT2232C allows configuring of 2x UART / FIFO interfaces. Two new modes are added, one of them, Multi-Protocol Synchronous Serial Engine, is suitable for synchronous serial protocols like JTAG and SPI.

Drivers explanation

All of these devices require FTDI software drivers. These are available for free download from our website. The drivers are provided royalty free, and can be redistributed at no extra cost. FTDI supplies it's own in-house developed VCP Drivers for Windows '98, Windows '98SE, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows XP and Apple OS8/OS9/OSX operating systems.  

There is two types of software driver: 

Virtual COM Port (VCP) Drivers appear to the system as an extra Com Port (in addition to any existing hardware Com Ports). Application software accesses the USB device in the same way as it would access a standard Windows Com Port using the Windows VCOMM API calls or by using a Com Port  Library. For Delphi and C++ Builder applications use a Com Port Component such as TComPort to provide the interface.

D2XX Direct Drivers which allow application software to interface to FT232 and FT245 devices via a Windows DLL as opposed to a VCP.

There is also drivers for - Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Windows CE .NET(4.0 , 4.1), Windows CE 3.0, PocketPC 2002, available through 3rd parties.

FTDI customers who do not have their own USB Vendor ID (VID) can used FTDI's VID (6001) and default USB Product ID (PID). Alternatively FTDI customers can request a block of unique USB PID's for use with the FTDI VID. PID requests should be sent to support@ftdichip.com.
